Are they listening?
by Susanne King, MD

As Tom Daschle, President-elect Obama’s choice for secretary of health and human services, flies across the country to attend community meetings on health care reform, and the Obama Web site solicits opinions and health care stories from citizens, those of us who support a single-payer national health insurance program hold our collective breath. Will the incoming government really listen to the citizens who, in poll after poll, by a clear majority, support single-payer health care? Or will the vested interests of the private, for-profit health insurance lobby win again? (more…)

Israel Can’t Bomb Its Way to Peace

The assault on Gaza has more to do with internal politics than its national security. The U.S. needs to reengage forcefully in a Mideast peace process.

by Rosa Brooks

It’s a new year in an old and bloody world.

In Israel, politicians jockeying for power have launched the most lethal military assault on Palestinian territory in decades. Israel has justified its bombardment of Gaza on the grounds that Hamas broke a fragile, temporary cease-fire. The Israeli government is right to consider Hamas’ rocket attacks on Israeli civilians inexcusable, but the timing of the Israeli military offensive has more to do with politics than anything else.

Ehud Barak, Israel’s Labor Party defense minister, and Tzipi Livni, the foreign minister from the centrist Kadima party, are both contenders for prime minister in Israel’s Feb. 6 national elections. …and is this a metaphor for the country, or my floundering website traffic, or both?  Time will tell and in the meantime, I shall be rethinking the title of this blog and my part in the sinking of the ship of state.  I would like to draw your attention to the new favicon in the URL window.  It is to pay homage to this great state in which I live (when it works).

Election Over!

November 24, 2008 By: Ken Nicholson Category: Meta No Comments →

I haven’t posted in a long time due to election pressures.  I am the reluctant vice-chair of the Democratic Party in the most evil, right-wing, Republican county in New Mexico.  We did not carry any of our local candidates, but did increase the Democrat vote by about twenty percent.

I have noticed that my blog site stats are down considerably and I assume it is in part  because of my neglect.  Some have suggested that the blog name is not very appealing.  I will think about that…  OK, I thought about it, and I’m gonna keep it.
